Medicare Part A (Hospital Insurance) Costs
Part A Monthly Premium
Most people don’t pay a Part A premium because they paid Medicare taxes while working. Those who paid FICA taxes for fewer than 40 quarters and certain persons under age 65 with disabilities must pay a monthly premium in order to voluntarily enroll in Medicare Part A. Individuals who paid FICA taxes for at least 30 quarters or were married to someone who paid FICA taxes for at least 30 quarters may buy into Part A at a reduced monthly premium rate, which is $278 in 2024. The full monthly premium for those who paid FICA taxes for less than 30 quarters is $505 in 2024.
